Regional identity -- the development of one -- was the driving argument for the CDC and the Quaboag
Valley Chamber of Commerce to combine efforts in a tourism initiative in the Spring of 2000.
Out of the initial efforts of the two agencies, the Quaboag Hills logo and theme were developed.
The goal was to provide the 15 towns in the region
with a common vision of the beauty and natural resources of the area and to develop a theme around which new
and growing businesses might develop and expand. Tourism has been viewed, by the CDC, as one additional tool
in the arsenal against unemployment and underemployment in the region.
Since the two agencies undertook this initiative, a number of products and programs have developed,
including:
- Acceptance of the logo and theme as characteristic of the region
- The redevelopment of the quaboag.com website (through the Chamber) into a dynamic and professional
resource both to visitors and residents.
- Creation of tourism display stands and placement in 40 locations throughout the region.
- Improvements in the Quaboag Hills Guide (formerly the Brimfield Guide), making it an award-winning
publication.
- Development of Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZ's) in those member towns that are the most enthusiastic
about using tourism as a boon to their community's economic well being.
- Development of other promotional materials, including a four color flyer, Calendar of Annual Events
and a regional map.
Tourism Development in the Quaboag Hills region is still in its infancy. In July, 2003 the two
organizations were able to assign Bonny Bernat with the role of continuing and
fostering the initiative. The following year progress continued with the
addition of a AmeriCorps VISTA (Skochii M. Bennett) filling the role of Regional
Tourism Coordinator. In a joint effort the fifteen towns of the Quaboag
Hills Region participated in a summer a Historic Driving Tour in the
summer 2005 "A Civil War Summer in the Quaboag Hills Region". In the fall of
2005 the QVCDC applied for a MassPike Toursim Grant and is awaiting the results.
The grant will fund interpretive signage thoughout the region.
